Thoughts on writing

Here, at this moment, it is time to sit and reflect. Thoughts on writing… the writers thoughts on writing… here at the end of the day it is time to ruminate on writing.z

Writing… just do it.

I talk to so many people who get excited when I tell them I’m a writer, that I’ve written books. They usually say something along the lines of how they want to write this book, or they have a book idea. Then they ask me how to write.

I just look at them and ask them to pick out a noun. They do. Then I ask them to pick a verb. They do. Then I tell them to just keep doing that and they’re writing. The typical response is less than friendly. The truth of the matter is, to be a writer you simply need to do it. Just put words down, one after the other, until your tale is told. Don’t death-edit the sentences and paragraphs, the pages, the chapters. Just write them. Editing comes after the book is finished. I’m not saying you can’t go fix typos, or make minor adjustments to the work as you do it. But if you death-edit the words, sentences, paragraphs, chapters… you’ll never finish the work. Simply put it all down, every drop. Then go back and edit it.
